Untitled (Strip Construction Quilt with Bars and Multiple Borders)

Description

This quilt demonstrates how the practice of crazy quilting was adapted by women from different social and racial backgrounds in the twentieth century. The middle of the quilt features columns composed of the closely fitted, sharp-edged fragments of fabric often associated with crazy quilting. Around its edges, however, long rectangular and small square pieces create a border that evidences the “bars and strips” patterns pioneered by Southern African American quilters. The fabric used by its unidentified maker, a variety of cotton as opposed to velvet or satin, also differentiates this quilt from a traditional Victorian-era crazy quilt.
